A chronicle of novelist Christopher Isherwoodfs time as a young man in Berlin, escaping stiff England during World War II. Christopher (Smith) revels in the abundance of boys in Berlin, engaging in a relationship with beautiful street sweeper Heinz, whom he later attempts to rescue from the clutches of Nazi Germany. He also befriends eccentric aspiring actress Jean Ross (Poots), on whom he based his famous character, Sally Bowles.
