When I listened to Fuzjko Hemming play the piano, I felt like she was touching my soul gently, and sometimes shaking it to the core.

Fuzjko Hemming is 78 years old, and is half-Japanese, half-Swedish. Born in Berlin just before World War II, she moved to Japan with her family as a child and grew up in Tokyo. Although she lost hearing in her right ear in her teens, she was called a genius girl, but did not get the good fortune of becoming a well-known pianist. When she was 30 she moved back to Germany via refugee visa, due to not having been assigned a nationality at birth, and immigrated to Vienna a few years later. In her mid-30s Hemming was to perform in a Leonard Bernstein-produced concert, but just before opening day she lost the hearing in her left ear due to living in subpar conditions.
