The Artist
Interview by: Izumi Hasegawa
Nov 9, 2011
Jean DuJardin and Berenice Bejo - The Artist
Four Seasons Hotel, Beverly Hills

Q1: How readily or reluctantly did you first face this challenge of communicating without sound?
JD: [Translator]: It was not a big challenge for us.
JD: It's not really different. For you it's a silent movie. For us it's a talking movie because we have lines on set. There's a lot of noise on the set, the music. We spoke in English, in French, in gibberish. It's very alive.
BB: I think the part of the character for us is the same in a silent movie and in a talking movie because we had lines to learn, and actually the challenge is more for Michele [Hazanavicius] who has to say the story without any sound or dialogue, just the images. But for me I worked the same. I tried to find the character and how I would be an American actress in the '30's. I'm sure if this was a talking movie she'd be exactly the same, for me.

Q2: Do you hope this catches on and that Hollywood makes a lot more silent movies...
