Q1: How important is a "message" in a movie to you?
AB: It's very near the top, maybe at the top. I always find some sort of message or something that I can believe in. I can be subtle or it can hit you on the head like a hammer.
Q2: So was that the central thing that drew you to this project?
AB: Maybe it was the emotion. I like the emotion of Tanya. I like what she was going through and wrestling with and dealing with. I thought it was perhaps based on a true story. I thought that would be wonderful and a real triumph that a little girl from South Central won the National Spelling Bee against all odds. They don't even have doors on their toilets and so forth. I was so disappointed when I found out it wasn't true! But then I was so impressed that out of Doug's Anglo spirit he could come up with this story about this little chocolate girl in South Central and how positive and beautiful it was. So I was disappointed and then I was elated.
