Q1: Why did you do this with all the controversy you knew would be coming?
AL: I think it's the sense of danger that is the thrill that made me want to do it. I contradict myself. I don't know why. Especially after Brokeback Mountain and people have such a high opinion of me, especially in Asia. I wasn't thinking about NC-17 and people raising an eyebrow. I was afraid in Chinese society what do they think of me doing something like this? Is it even possible to make this in China? Including very gutsy writing from Eileen Chang, to put female sexuality, what do they get from sex, in the backdrop of the whole patriotic war against the Japanese. It's never been done before. That scared me more than the sex. The sex, it depends on how far you want to go. When I decided to do it I had no idea who I was going to work with and how far I wanted to go or could go.
