The Sun is Rising on Japanese Film

At the 81st Academy Awards, Japanese films were honored with Oscars in both the Foreign Language Film and Short Animation categories. Neither film featured the samurai or big-eyed anime characters which are typically expected in Japanese movies. Okuribito (Departures), the winner for Best Foreign Language Film, is a contemporary drama focusing on the life of an unemployed young man who finally finds a job as a Nohkanshi, a traditional mortician who ceremonially prepares the body for burial as the family watches – work that is virtually unheard of among modern Japanese people. The Short Animation category winner, Tsumiki No Ie (La Maison en Petits Cubes), is an almost stateless artistic achievement; its pastel images appear almost French in style, and one would never know at first glance that it was a product of Japan.
