Q1: Why did you end up not shooting in Ukraine?
LS: We did film some things in Ukraine, but we didn't spend a lot of money there so it doesn't make it into the press notes. I went to Ukraine to scout and the way I chose to do that was to mimic the journey in the book, which was also my own journey. I basically went to look for my Grandfathers (home) which was called Thomasspiel and is somewhere along the north-south route between Kiev and Odessa. I took with me as close of a match to Alex as I could find. We met this Ukrainian Director of Photography/Club kid and he was just insane. He had huge pompadour hair and they swore he was a good cameraman and he wore these old lady Boca Raton Jewish sunglasses and huge bellbottoms with Pro Ked shoes. They thought it would be a good idea to take a camera with me because we were going to be in Ukraine and I just felt like the movie was a road trip and I wanted to steal as much footage as I could.
